Broadcast – Television Serial
Maha
Chautari, educational TV serial broadcasts details of conflict
situations at local level with local solutions. The storylines of
MaHa Chautari generally are taken from radio drama Maha Adalat and
Maha Chautari. The TV serial is being produced collaboratively by
Antenna Foundation Nepal and Maha Sanchar and partly supported by
The Asia Foundation. Each programme is 30 minute long broadcasted
every Saturday from NTV after its 8 pm news. Broadcast of Maha Chautari
TV serial started in February 2006. According to Nepal Television
popularity survey (2005-2006, Phase III, Kathmandu Valley) MaHa
Chautari ranks fourth on the most popular television show (1114
household). Fifty five percent of the NTV viewers regularly watch
MaHa Chautari.
MaHa Chautari: Television Serial
Following the popularity of the radio drama MaHa
Adalat, Antenna and MAHA Sanchar are collaborating for production
and airing of 42 episode of MAHA Chautari on television.
Each programme is 30 minute long broadcasted every
Saturday from NTV after its 8 pm news. Programme aims to provide
Nepali television viewers with educational television serials that
show them the details of a local conflict situation and inform them
about the possibilities for action in their communities and their
lives.
Earlier format of radio drama was more of a court
setting held by the duo Haribansha Acharya and Madankrishan Shrestha
in different parts of Nepal. Issues of MaHa Chautari are based on
this storyline for the Chhinophano radio programme. The artists
have already done over 200, 10 minute radio dramas. The storylines
are selected from the best dramas aired through the radio programmes.
The focus of television series have been
on different social issues at the grass root level and at the same
time provide the target audience with tools of peace building techniques.
Issues covered in Maha Chautari include:

Beli Chameli-
Conflict Widows and issue of re-marriage (5 episodes)
2.
SLC-
Issue of disparity between government and private schools and
number of students passing SLC (4 episodes)
3.
Manche-
Issue of exclusion from economic activities, untouchables, and
their social sufferings during the conflict (2 episodes: two
episodes repeated due to Jana Andolan)
4.
Tika Ram Bisthapit-
Issue of forced displacement due to armed conflict, resettlement
and integration of IDPs (4 episodes)
5.
Dhan Prasad-
Scarcity of medicines at the local level, local doctors cheating
patients by providing fake and expired medicine and access to
medical services, a fantasy story about side effects of expired
medicine (3 episodes)
6.
Sino-
Issue of managing dead animals especially in the Terai belt
of Nepal, conflict between local people and so called untouchable
to manage the dead bodies of animals (3 episodes)
7.
Dakarmi-
Issue of migration, available alternatives in Nepal and sufferings
of those who are working in Middle East and South East Asia
countries (5 episodes)
